One of the glories of living in this part of the world is our fresh fruit. Peaches and strawberries and blueberries are on display in our stores and at many roadside stands. It is a wonderful variety.

This summer, we will enjoy another kind of fruit. In the Book of Galatians, Paul lists these as fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Each week, we will take a closer look at one or two of these fruits to see how we might prepare our own “soil” for the Spirit to grow that fruit within us.

Let’s start today by asking the Lord to bring these things to mind so that we become more the men and women God would have us become.

License to Kill?

Paul gets personal in Galatians, pleading with the people of Galatia to claim their freedom that is theirs in Christ: “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.”

“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use  your freedom to indulge sinful nature; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: Love your neighbor as yourself.” Galatians 5:13-14

  • It is each of our charge to protect this church.

  • Move in step with the Spirit.

  • The Holy Spirit reminds us of His truth.

Love

What does it look like when we live in the Spirit?

And now I will show you the most excellent way.

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.
