Sermon Series: The Questions Jesus Asked

We don’t know if Jesus was aware of Socrates — who had lived some three centuries prior. But Jesus was certainly a master of what is now known as the Socratic method of teaching. That is, he constantly asked questions of his students and hearers; probing questions, personal questions, provocative questions designed to get us to think.
Questions are important because they open conversations, and get us to consider things we might rather ignore. So, in this sermon series this season we’re going to take up the challenge, and consider some of Jesus’ most important questions.

Jesus Anointed at Bethany

“Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial. I tell you the truth, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”

Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard

“‘Friend, I am not being unfair to you. Didn’t you agree to work for a denarius? Take your pay and go. I want to give the man who was hired last the same as I gave you. Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?’
“So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”
